Tasting Notes

colour

Remarkable vibrancy and youthful condition – something that Evans & Tate Chardonnay wines are renowned for.

aroma

The nose displays aromas of orange blossom and ripe, vibrant stone fruits.

Palate

Dry malt, fresh toast and struck match complexity from wild barrel fermentation on solids with citrus, toasted oatmeal and a touch of zesty lemon butter on the palate.

cellaring

Will continue to develop for at least five to ten years from vintage.

Technical

Vintage

The 2023 vintage in Margaret River started with the 2022 winter temperatures being cooler than the long-term average, which is fantastic for ensuring a sound dormancy for the vines to set them up for a strong growing season. There was markedly less-than-average winter rain however but enough to re-charge dams and the soil profile.

winemaking

The fruit for this wine is of the Gin Gin clone which is renowned for producing powerful Chardonnay wines in Margaret River whilst retaining a beautiful acid line. When the decision was made to pick on 27 February 2023, the fruit was selectively hand picked over two days with the fruit then being cooled in a cold room to 8°C before loading the small press with the whole bunches. The fruit was then gently squeezed and the cool, turbid juice went directly into French oak barrels for wild fermentation.

Reviews

Ray Jordan, WA Wine Review 2026

Already showing a degree of complexity with that merging of stone fruit, pear, and lime, with some slightly nutty roasted cashew-like characters on the nose. On the palate, there's a rich concentration of fruit with layered complexity coming from the wild ferment and time in French oak. It's textured and crisp, but there is a dry, savoury minerality which gives it lift and life through to a long finish. First-rate wine. Cellar 8 years.
